The attraction of permanent mold casting is easy to understand: reuse the cavity instead of making a new sand mold for each cycle. Yet the reusable mold must suit the alloy, release the component and remain thermally controlled during production. Sand casting offers a different balance of flexibility and recurring mold preparation.
Reuse changes the design conversation
A sand mold is broken away after casting. A permanent metal mold normally opens for removal, creating different constraints on parting, draft and features that prevent withdrawal. Cores and additional tooling can extend the available geometry, but their cost and practicality need review.
When comparing proposals, ask how the supplier intends to form the most difficult feature. An internal passage may influence the route more than the component’s simple external outline suggests.
Mold temperature belongs in the production plan
The metal mold participates in a repeated heating and cooling cycle. Preparation and thermal management therefore influence consistent filling and solidification. Sand molds have a different thermal behavior and are replaced each cycle.
This difference should be reflected in process development rather than reduced to a claim that one route always produces better parts. The alloy, section arrangement and required properties must be considered together.
Follow the component into machining
If both routes require the same finished bores and faces, compare the casting stock and workholding arrangements they provide. A more consistent blank may offer machining advantages, but those advantages should be established for the actual component.
Specify the delivery condition clearly. A supplier quoting a raw casting cannot be compared directly with one supplying heat treatment, machining and dimensional inspection in the same price.
Test the economics against design stability
A reusable mold is a commitment to a geometry and production route. Stable repeat demand can support that commitment; frequent revisions may change it. Sand tooling also has development and maintenance costs, so it should not be treated as a cost-free alternative.
