Gravity die casting and high-pressure die casting can both use reusable metal tooling, but the way metal enters the cavity differs. That distinction affects the production equipment and the design questions that need attention. Calling both routes die casting without identifying the filling method leaves an important part of the proposal undefined.

Filling pressure is a process distinction, not a quality grade

Gravity filling relies on the metal head and the mold arrangement. High-pressure die casting uses an injection system to fill the die. The pressure route can support different filling behavior, but pressure alone does not establish that every region of a component is acceptable.

The supplier must still consider venting, flow paths, cooling and the location of important features. A quality comparison should use the specified examinations and finished-part requirements rather than an assumption that more pressure necessarily means a better component.

The geometry must suit the selected equipment

Walls, bosses, parting surfaces and ejection features should be reviewed as part of a complete mold design. A casting developed for one route may require changes before it becomes an efficient candidate for the other.

This matters when converting an existing component. Quoting the current drawing is a useful start, but the supplier should identify any proposed geometry change and its effect on the functional interfaces. Those changes need engineering approval before tooling release.

Clarify later heat treatment and joining

Post-casting requirements can influence route selection. Conventional and specialized high-integrity die-casting methods should not be treated as identical when discussing internal quality, heat treatment or welding. The actual proposed method and qualification evidence matter.

If machining or pressure testing follows casting, include those operations in the process review. A rough part’s appearance cannot demonstrate how it will perform after material is removed or in a sealed assembly.

Compare a real production schedule

Tooling, equipment availability and repeat quantities affect the delivered result. Ask how the quotation separates initial development from recurring production and what assumptions support the lead time.
